Why Gratitude?

Approaching the end of another year always makes me reflect on what I’ve achieved over the past 11 months. The older I get the faster the years seem to go by and the less I seem to care about the tangible things I achieved. Sure, I worked hard and had some financial rewards. But is that really what I was proud of?

These days what I’m most proud of are the blessings I find myself writing in my gratitude journal each day. The little things that make such a difference to me even if it’s just a smile or a kind word from a stranger. Or my clients who open up to me and allow my help. Or the special friends who listen while I pour my heart out to them when things aren’t going well. Or to family for just being there and loving me unconditionally.

There are physical things too. Like the birds who wake me up every day with their song, the plants and trees that ground me when I go walking in the morning, the sun on my back, the wind in my hair, the beautiful beaches here in Queensland, the cozy and comfortable home I live in.

I could go on forever about all the things I’m grateful for, but I won’t. All I really want to say is that having gratitude is what keeps my heart open and attracts more of the things that are important to me. I know that many people talk about it and we all know how powerful it is, but how many actually practise gratitude everyday?

It can be one of those things you know you should do, but like so many other things, gets forgotten in the busyness of a day. Sometimes we just need to slow down and not do so much. If you don’t allow time for self reflection, it’s easy to miss the miracles that are all around you.

So as we enter into another festive season, I just want to ask you to look inside your heart and recognise what’s really important – the things that you may sometimes take for granted. Then count your blessings and hug your family and friends just a little bit tighter.

The world around you is full of magical moments if you just stop to notice them.

Have a wonderful Christmas and I hope 2018 brings you everything your heart desires.

Feeling Grateful

You know how some days everything just works and you get that warm fuzzy feeling inside that someone out there is looking after you? Do you ever notice what you were thinking about right before that happens? At these times I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude. It reminds me that even when things may not seem to be going well, it is still important to find something to be grateful for.  I know some days that’s difficult so perhaps it will just be that the sun is shining, you have food in your fridge to nourish you, or you have a comfortable bed to escape to and hope that tomorrow will be a better day. Whatever is going on in your life, there is always something positive to be found somewhere. Sometimes we just need to look a little harder to find it.

I believe gratitude is the thing that keeps us in a state of love. And the funny thing about it is that the more we acknowledge what we have to be grateful for, the more positivity and abundance will be delivered to us. As you probably know, you create your own life circumstances based on your thoughts and beliefs. You will receive whatever it is that you focus on the most. So if you are constantly complaining about how unfulfilling your job is, that your partner does not respect you, that you don’t have enough time or money to do the things you want to do, how tired you are, then guess what, that’s what you will get. If you affirm to your higher self that these circumstances are what defines you, it doesn’t know the difference between what you want and what you don’t want, it will just give you back what you put most of your attention into.

So it’s obvious that if you don’t want these things, then focus on what you do want as though you already have it. Look for the positive things in your workplace, appreciate what you do love about your partner, be grateful for the small things in life that are free and energise you, such as going for a long walk in nature, having a long, soothing bath, listening to music or just spending quality time with your loved ones. Slow down, laugh, dance, play. Tell yourself daily how grateful you are for all the abundance in your life. Affirm to yourself that every day in every way your life is becoming better and better. You’ll be amazed at how things will turn around.

Sometimes we just need to slow right down, change our focus and realise that we can have whatever we want. Most of the things we worry about never happen. It’s easier to accept the bad with the good because there’s a grand plan that’s not always obvious while we’re in the middle of it, but ultimately things usually work out the way they’re meant to and for our highest good. I'm sure you've heard all of this before, but sometimes we just need to be reminded. So what do you feel grateful for today?
